Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision, the Nuclear Plant Reactor Operator (Unlicensed) operates all nuclear power plant equipment, auxiliary reactor systems, main steam turbines, generator, auxiliary turbine, generator equipment, plant demineralizers, and radwaste equipment, including the waste treatment facility.

  • Operate all nuclear power plant and site equipment. Responsible for tagging, observing, and reporting to the Control Room Supervisor all abnormal activities and conditions within site boundary.

  • Operate, read and records radiation detector instruments.

  • Performs routine operating maintenance on equipment and instruments.

  • Makes rounds of equipment and observes temperatures, pressures, oil levels and water levels from recording instruments and related equipment. Changes recorder charts and checks operating condition of plant equipment and reports abnormal conditions to the Control Room Supervisor.

  • Checks fuel deliveries and levels of all fuel oil service tanks and performs transfers of all fuel, lube and waste oils.

  • Lubricates and changes oil in equipment.

  • Uses hand tools in the performance of work, including such duties as greasing screens, removing cover plates of strainers, removing and replacing defective grease fittings, adjusting pump and valve packing glands.

  • Perform surveillance on all equipment as required.

  • Maintains general cleanliness of plant equipment by wiping, dusting, and removing oil and water spillage or other hazardous conditions.

  • Reads and records supplementary plant, Radwaste, and waste(delete question mark) water treatment operating log data.

  • Performs inspections, routine maintenance, and operation of the Radwaste, and waste (delete hyphen) water treatment facility.

  • Must be able to diagnose trouble, exercise independent judgment, and make quick and correct decisions during normal and abnormal periods.

  • Observes and reports to the Control Room Supervisor all abnormal activities and conditions within site boundary.

  • Operates robotic inspection equipment.

  • Performs necessary decontamination activities as required.

  • Prepares written reports of operating conditions as required.

  • Report abnormal conditions observed or encountered; take corrective measures within assigned responsibilities.

  • Successfully completes, when assigned, Radwaste training courses and the Non-Licensed Nuclear Plant Reactor Operator training course.

  • Maintains proficiency and obtain an NRC Reactor Operator License; therefore, candidates must successfully complete company sponsored and directed supplementary course of training and pass the NRC Reactor Operator License examination upon completion of training.

  • Performs assigned duties on rotating shifts, indoors and outdoors, in all seasons of the year, for extended periods and under difficult conditions including work controlled areas deemed acceptable by Health Physicists.

  • Feeds and mixes chemicals such as: hypochlorite into condenser intakes.

  • Performs fire brigade and fire fighting duties.

  • Takes samples of water and chemicals within the radwaste/waste water treatment system.

  • Makes regular and special chemical analysis.

  • Performs a shift turnover to ensure the necessary operational information is passed from watch to watch.


The incumbent must possess the proven competencies displayed during the hiring process, besides the following qualifications:

  1. (3) Three years of power plant experience, two (2) of which were at a nuclear power plant in the position of Nuclear Auxiliary and/or Plant Equipment Operator or similar positions where an advanced understanding of the operation and functions of turbine generating units and their auxiliaries and their relationship to the operation of the plant was acquired. At the discretion of management, candidates with three years of power plant operator experience and with appropriate qualifications and training will be considered. An Associate Degree in Science of Engineering may be substituted for the two-year Nuclear Power Plant experience requirement.

2.Must pass a job-related qualifying examination.

3.Must have successfully completed the Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) test.

4.Must have or acquire an Assistant Nuclear Power Plant Operating Engineer license (or equivalent) within one and one half (1 1/2) years of job tenure or as directed by management and must acquire a Nuclear Plant Operating Engineers license (or equivalent*) within three (3) years of job tenure or as directed by management.

5.Must be able to pass the minimum physical requirements as prescribed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Regulations.
