Job Summary/Purpose

The role of the Platform Engineer (Cloud FinOps) is to lead the Artificial Intelligence department’s Platform Engineering FinOps and Cloud Cost Management efforts in support of the products we create. This role will work in an integrated DevOps model to provide product ownership for the technology and tools to enable cloud cost management. They will adopt a Platform as a Product mentality and operate with agile product development principles to improve the current platforms and build new ones. This role will own our cost management program and be instrumental in optimizing cloud resources, ensure efficient usage and implement strategies to control costs.

AI products to be built upon the AI Platform are a combination of software, data, and other digital tools that automate work processes. AI products may leverage a combination of analytics tools to automate decision making such as descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics models. AI products may also leverage a combination of automation tools such as robotic process automation. AI products may also include generative AI tools, providing a conversational interface to AI products.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive Cloud Cost Optimization: This role will handle all aspects of cloud costs. This includes implementing a cost management program to ensure optimal resource allocation and cost efficiency.

  • Usage Monitoring and Analysis: The role will own products such as Kubecost that will help monitor and analyze our cloud usage patterns to help identify opportunities for optimization and cost reduction.

  • Cost Modeling and Forecasting: Develop and maintain cost forecast models for different cloud services to facilitate accurate forecasting. Work with the PMO to book accruals for cloud costs.

  • Implement Cost Controls, Policies, and Allocation: Design and implement cost controls and policies to manage and limit spending on cloud services. This includes working with cross-functional teams to ensure adherence to cost management guidelines.

  • Cloud Bill Allocation: This role will work with PMO to allocate the monthly cloud bill to the respective users of cloud services. This includes differentiating non-prod from prod workloads to allocate non-prod costs to development efforts and working with engineering to make sure things are tagged correctly.

  • Recommendation and Reporting: Provide regular reports and recommendations on cost optimization and strategies to key stakeholders.

  • Cloud Service Selection and Sizing: Work with architects, engineering, and planning/delivery to estimate cloud costs for new products. Work with engineering teams to select right sized cloud resources for workload requirements.

  • Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with engineering teams to understand application requirements and ensure the platform meetings performance and scalability needs.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical or business-related field or the equivalent work experience. Advanced degree or equivalent experience is a plus.

Minimum experience required of the position

Platform Engineer: 5+ years of progressive experience in technology roles

Platform Engineer Sr: 7+ years of progressive experience in technology roles

  • Experience in developing and implementing cloud cost optimization strategies.

  • Proven experience as a Cloud Cost Management Engineer or similar role.

  • Proven experience with Cloud Architecture in AWS and Azure.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position

  • Well-organized with good written and verbal communication, reporting and presentation skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Knowledge of cloud pricing models and billing structures.

  • Working knowledge in all areas of technology (infrastructure, applications, software development, end-user platforms, IT operations).

  • Good understanding of how the utility business operates.

  • Existing positive working relationships with existing business leadership.

  • Understand the basics of analytics and how it might be used to solve problems.

  • Excellent meeting facilitation skills.

  • Self-motivated, team player, action and results oriented.

Any certificates, licenses, etc. required for the position

AWS Certifications for [Cloud Practitioner, DevOps Engineer and/or Solutions Architect] are a plus
